Empire Electric has launched a pilot project to evaluate the use of LED street lights.

Branson is one of five communities to be included in the pilot project, with a stretch of Roark Valley Rd. being switched over from the old lights to the LEDs which are considerably flatter.

Of course this goes well beyond looks. The LEDs are supposed to be 60 percent more energy efficient and more directional. Also, where the old lights have to be replaced every four years, the new LEDs should last 20 years.

The initial instillation is more expensive, which is why the lights will be monitored for two years to see if switch can make up the difference.
